Wheel Bearing FAQ: 20 Questions Answered

Direct answers to the most common wheel bearing questions. No filler.

How much does wheel bearing replacement cost?+
$350-$800 installed for a sealed hub assembly at an independent shop. $130-$400 for a serviceable tapered bearing. Dealers run 25-40% higher.
How long does a wheel bearing last?+
85,000-100,000 miles for a sealed hub assembly under normal driving. AWD bearings see 70,000-85,000 miles. Serviceable tapered bearings last indefinitely if repacked every 30,000-50,000 miles.
What does a bad wheel bearing sound like?+
A humming or droning noise that gets louder with speed and changes when you gently swerve left and right. Turning left makes a bad right bearing louder. Advanced failure produces grinding.
Can you drive with a bad wheel bearing?+
A slight hum: drive carefully, schedule repair within 2-4 weeks. Grinding: drive only to the shop. Wheel play detected when jacked: do not drive. Wheel separation at speed is possible.
Is it safe to ignore a bad wheel bearing?+
No. A failed bearing can seize or allow the wheel to separate from the vehicle. Either event at highway speed can cause a fatal crash. The $350-$800 repair cost is far less than the consequence.
What is a hub assembly?+
A sealed, pre-greased unit that contains the wheel bearing, ABS sensor ring, and hub flange. It bolts onto the steering knuckle. When worn, the entire unit is replaced. Used on most 2000+ passenger vehicles.
What is the difference between a hub assembly and a tapered bearing?+
A hub assembly is a sealed unit (replace whole when worn, $200-$400). A tapered bearing uses separate races that can be repacked ($50-$150 parts). Most post-2000 cars use hub assemblies. Older vehicles and trucks often use tapered bearings.
How long does wheel bearing replacement take?+
1.5 hours for a FWD sedan front hub (AllData flat-rate). 2.8 hours for a Subaru Outback rear AWD hub. Multiply by shop rate ($85-$185/hr) for labor cost.
Should I replace both bearings at once?+
Not necessarily. Wheel bearings do not wear at identical rates. Replace the failed side only. If both are the same high mileage, replacing both saves a future labor visit - ask your shop.
What brand wheel bearing should I buy?+
SKF or FAG for European vehicles (BMW, Audi, Mercedes). NTN or Koyo for Japanese vehicles (Honda, Toyota, Subaru). Timken for American trucks. Moog or National for budget applications. Avoid Dorman for daily drivers.
Can I do a wheel bearing replacement myself?+
Yes for most hub assembly replacements if you have a floor jack, jack stands, torque wrench, and a hub puller/press adapter. AWD rear bearings on models like the Subaru Outback require a hydraulic press and special adapters - recommend a shop for those.
What tools do I need for DIY wheel bearing replacement?+
Floor jack (3-ton), jack stands, torque wrench (0-250 ft-lb), impact wrench or breaker bar, hub puller or press adapter kit, socket set (17-36mm), brake cleaner. AutoZone and O'Reilly offer free tool loans.
What happens if a wheel bearing is not replaced?+
Progressive failure: hum becomes grinding, bearing generates heat, races spall and fragment, wheel develops play, bearing seizes or hub separates. At any stage past grinding, the vehicle becomes dangerous to drive.
Why did my wheel bearing fail so quickly after replacement?+
Most early failures are caused by: incorrect axle nut torque (too loose allows play, too tight causes overheating), contamination during installation, incorrect hub press-fit (bore too large), or a defective part. Check the axle nut torque first.
Does a bad wheel bearing affect alignment?+
Not directly, but a worn bearing allows wheel wobble that can make alignment measurements inaccurate. Replace the bearing first, then check alignment. Also check alignment if the repair required removing any steering or suspension link.
Will a bad wheel bearing cause my car to shake?+
Yes - a bad front bearing causes steering wheel vibration. A bad rear bearing causes vibration through the floor or seat. Vibration that does not improve with tyre balancing and changes with the swerve test strongly indicates a bearing.
Can a wheel bearing cause a wheel to fall off?+
Yes. A severely failed bearing with significant wheel play can fail completely, allowing the hub to separate from the knuckle at speed. This is rare but has occurred and has caused fatalities. Never ignore wheel play.
Is the front or rear wheel bearing more expensive?+
On FWD vehicles, front bearings are slightly more expensive. On AWD vehicles, rear bearings are often the most expensive - a Subaru Outback rear takes 2.8 AllData hours vs 1.8 for the front.
What warranty should I expect on a wheel bearing replacement?+
Premium brands (SKF, Timken, NTN) offer limited lifetime parts warranty. Most independent shops offer 12 months/12,000 miles labor warranty. National chains often offer 24 months/24,000 miles. Get it in writing.
Can a wheel bearing affect fuel economy?+
A failing bearing increases rolling resistance, which can reduce fuel economy by 1-3%. This is rarely significant enough to be noticeable but a severely failed bearing with heavy drag can reduce fuel economy by 5% or more.
